Why arent you asking for a promotion If you want to move up at work, but youre going nowhere its time to take a hard look at what you might be doing wrong. Doing work that is OK, or acceptable may be enough to keep a job, but its usually not enough to be promoted to a job with more responsibility. Are you visible enough? Do you really believe youre worthy of a promotion? If you just keep your head down and do your job without creating visibility for yourself, and if you are not asking for more, your boss will assume that you are happy with your current job. Why then, dont we ask about opportunities to move up within an organisation? Our hesitancy to ask for a promotion is more than likely related to our overall fear of self promotion. When we contemplate asking for a promotion, that nagging voice in our head chimes in with, Who do you think you are?, Do you really think youre worthy of a promotion? Your boss will laugh at you!, Arent you full of yourself? However, listening to the negative self talk is sabotaging your career and can very well stand between you and a promotion. Has it ever dawned on you to be proactive and take control of your career and actually ask for that promotion? You need to do what you can to get noticed by the people who have the power to promote you. When something youve worked on goes exceptionally well, write a memo to management praising the team youve worked with. Our hesitancy to ask for a promotion is more than likely related to our overall fear of self-promotion. Dont be afraid to tell your supervisor about your career goals. Talk to your boss. In preparation for this meeting, I recommend you do a bit of homework. Write out your achievements at work Describe how the work you do benefits the organization and your boss or department in particular. State up front that you enjoy working with him/her and love the organization and are interested in new opportunities to rise to the next level. Ask for information about new opportunities and what, if anything, you need to do to move up. Once you set your sights on a specific position, put a strategic action plan in place to communicate your value proposition to the key influencers and decision makers. Make sure youre visible. If advancing your career is what you want, you need to take an action. Continue to do a great job in your current position. Dont assume that your boss knows that you are interested in moving up. Asking about new opportunities will lead to a dialogue about what is available and what you need to do to get promoted. Patience is a virtue, even when seeking a promotion. Be realistic with yourself about your qualifications and job performance, and dont get frustrated if you get passed over for a promotion. Wait for the right opportunity and go for it. If you hate your job, or if you believe you chose the wrong career, it is imperative that you make a change sooner rather than later. Life is just too short and far too precious for you to be doing something that you donât love and enjoy. Any job is better than no job, and that is especially true if you are managing a ton of debt from going to school and getting your degree in these times of high tuition rates. It is also easy for young people to take jobs that donât necessarily play to their strengths because they arenât yet crystal clear on what their strengths are. Whether you are more experienced or just starting out, here are three ways you can decide if a position is right for you. 1. Is it in alignment with your core values? Each of us has a set of core values, and if we work in an environment or for a company that is out of alignment with those values, we will eventually become unhappy. Before you take a job, you need to determine the core values of the company. You can find them embedded in the companyâs mission and vision statements. You can learn about the companyâs values by talking to people who have had direct dealings with it whether it is an employee or as a customer or client. If you find that the company or organization has values that are in opposition to yours or are not in alignment with yours, then you are better served to decline a position with them. I was unfortunate enough to work in an environment that made me feel out of integrity for a time, and I was miserable, so I know what I am talking about, I assure you. I witnessed actions on the part of my superior that I believed were unethical. I observed a so-called âleaderâ who was more of a master manipulator. The occasions when total untruths were told to both employees and superiors are too numerous to count. I would have been a whistle blower except that I felt that it would come down to âhe said â" she said.â To say I was miserable is a major understatement. Take it from me. If you can avoid a position that puts you in that kind of bind, do. No job is worth that pain in the long. 2. Will there be room for advancement over time? This question is one that you will only answer if you ask the right questions and you do your homework before you take the job. You probably canât expect to come in at the top of the organization unless you're already an executive. If you are just starting out, the prospects of advancement would be important to consider. Will there be room for promotion? Are there other roles in the organization that you might grow into over time? Most people would like an opportunity to grow over time as opposed to staying stuck in the same job for years. No one wants to stay in the same position forever! Finding a place where you may have room for growth and advancement will be important to you over time. 3. Do you like the people there and does the culture feel good to you? The culture of a company or organization is important and often under appreciated. I have already shared that the culture in a previous position that I held was not so great for me. I have a former client who took a job that was perfect for her--on paper. We were so excited for her when she landed that job. It was right for her in every way until she actually started the job. How would we ever be able to anticipate that the culture she was about to enter would be hostile? From the first week, however, she ran into trouble getting the training she needed. She was also teased by younger workers who seemed to take delight in forcing her into uncomfortable positions. They played practical jokes on her. For example, they hid her phone from her and snickered among themselves when she got upset over it. Those examples are extreme, of course, but they were very real. Before taking a job, you may want to talk to some of the employees who are already working there to collect a little inside intel. Find out if people feel respected there. Inquire about whether or not co-workers support one another or undermine their fellow workers. Culture impacts your day-to-day experience of a workplace, so donât under estimate its importance. Given that you spend at least a third of your life on the job (if not more), it only makes sense that you give taking a position with a company a lot of thought. Consider each of these three questions carefully before you take any position. You owe it to yourself to use caution and be smart about where you decide to work. But recently, Fairygodboss women had a discussion in the Community revealing otherwise.I just found out Im having a boy. To be honest, I wanted a girl, one FGBer wrote.Im expecting a baby, and I just found out Im having a boy. To be 100% frank, part of me is disappointed I welches really wishing for a girl. I know that sounds awful, and Im privileged to even be having a (hopefully healthy) baby, but I cant help feeling this way. Has anyone else experienced this? Im sure itll change as my pregnancy progresses and when my baby is born, but right now I just feel super guilty for even having these thoughtsA few other FGB responded to let her know that she is bedrngnis alone, and that there are things she can do to feel better.I had a close friend wh o felt this way, but then after her baby boy arrived, she loved him every bit as much, one FGBer responded.You cant make yourself feel a certain way. You were thrilled and now youre disappointed, another wrote.Try looking at baby stuff for boys. Maybe itll inspire you, a third suggested.And others revealed they experienced similar thoughts during their pregnancies.This was me 1000%. I cried after finding out I was having a boy and no longer felt excited about my pregnancy. Now when I look at my son, it breaks my heart that I ever had those thoughts. I couldve never imagined how wonderful, exciting, hilarious and special being a boy mom would be. I know that I was blessed with the exact child for me and I promise you will feel the very same, one FGBer said.You dont need to feel guilty Youre experiencing an overwhelming flood of emotions at a time like that, and sometimes our overwhelmed mind picks weird, seemingly trivial things to focus our anxieties on. I think its easier to for yo ur brain to fixate on the minor stress of I kinda wanted a girl in order to avoid thinking about the huge, daunting, mega-anxiety of OMG Im going to have a kid Besides, its perfectly valid to grieve a moment over your disappointment, as long as you can move on after, another advised.I agree. You may feel disappointed or upset now, and thats okay.Allow yourself to feel these emotions and give yourself time to process them. But also realize that soon enough, you will get through this phase and be excited about your pregnancy and your son.It is great that you can acknowledge your feelings and work through them. I wanted a girl so badly. Now I have two boys, and I could not imagine a house full of glitter and princesses, one FGBer said. You will feel love like you have never experienced when you hold that little boy in your arms. Boys love their mommas in such a special way I truly love being a boy mom and selfishly enjoy being the princess of the house.
